Captain Marvel Will Take the Lead of the MCU, Says Kevin Feige

According to Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, the upcoming Captain Marvel movie will set up Brie Larson’s character as the center of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Phase 4 and beyond. Set in 1995, Marvel’s 21st big-screen adaptation explores the origin story of Carol Danvers, an American Air Force pilot who ultimately becomes part of an intergalactic Kree military team known as Starforce.

Captain Marvel reportedly precedes the Guardians of the Galaxy storyline but doesn’t explicitly set up that plot. In addition, Larson’s character arc represents a non-chronological origin story. Thus far, Marvel has released three Captain Marvel trailers, all of which emphasize the protagonist’s return to earth, and her relationships with both Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury – the future director of S.H.I.E.L.D. – and Jude Law’s Starforce commander, who mentors Danvers and trains her to be a divine leader of the Kree people.
